EUMKA
The European Migration Knowledge Archive (EUMKA) is an ongoing project of Studio Marshmallow, initiated by Iraklis Panagiotopoulos and Dan Thy Nguyen, two artists based in Germany. Originally developed to collect biographies of a pluralistic European society, it became a tool for online education and archiving perspectives and life experiences, which are not fully represented and perceived in a general mainstream. With the help of different supporters in Hamburg, we had the opportunity to film eight interviews. In the near and far future the amount of interviews will grow to depict the pluralistic complexity of the modern European society.

Our Mission
At latest in the summer 2015, when the so called “migrant crisis” hit the northern countries of europe, it turned out that topics like globalization, society and migration were not abstract subjects anymore. On european streets, in the media and in the spectrum of our closest environment: These topics were not only entangled in our normal life, but also became a tool to understand our globalized reality with all its complexities at the same time. However, in contrast to the multidimensional ramifications of our modern time, the topic “migration” is usually represented out of a very narrow perspective. First of all: Migration is seen as a very recent phenomenon, whereupon it shaped our european society at least since the beginning of our union. Secondly the main protagonists are underrepresented in the reception and perception of this social-political phenomenon – the so called migrants themselves.
The European Migration Knowledge Archive (EUMKA) is a project to give people a voice, who are normally not heard by a broader audience. Additionally it wants to show the history of a long and a diverse history of europe since 1945. As an archive of Oral HistoryOral history is the collection and study of historical information about individuals, families, important events, or everyday life using audiotapes, videotapes, or transcriptions of planned interviews. we want to give people the chance to see, learn from, understand and get inspired by the biographies and personal experiences of several individuals.
The interviews and the videocuts are as neutral as can be and don’t necessarily represent the creators own opinions.
